It was flown by an Upstate Revolutionary War militia. In June 2023, the Museum of the American Revolution announced that a never-before-displayed Revolutionary War flag was on view in Philadelphia. The flag will return to Spartanburg by early 2026. A private entity is donating the flag to the county library system. It will join the Kennedy Room of Local History.
It is around 250 years old and served as the regimental emblem, marking the regiment’s position on the battlefield. The Spartan Regiment, a militia formed in 1775 that fought in at least 37 engagements, including the Battle of Cowpens, flew the flag, aptly known as the Spartan Regiment flag. The flag features a dog, snake and 13 blue and gold bars. Above the animals, it reads “Spartan Reg;” below, it states “South Carolina.”
"Colors: Field of flag, dark blue; stars, shield border, sunburst, and emblem in upper corner, gold; clouds, gray; eagle body and arrows, brown; eagle head and tail, white; eagle beak and claws, yellow; ribbon, white; shield top dark blue; six red and seven white stripes."
"After the Revolution the armed forces were disbanded but the country soon found it needed at least a small army. The blue flag with the coat of arms of the United States in the
center and unit designation established a design pattern still followed today in army flags."
